Description of the Used Terms

Anxiety: Anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease about something that might happen in the future. It can make your body react like having a faster heartbeat, sweating, shaking, or dizziness. People with anxiety disorders often have thoughts that bother them and make them avoid certain situations. Anxiety differs from fear, a feeling you get when facing real and immediate danger. Anxiety is more general and long-lasting, while fear is more specific and short-term.

Depression: Depression is a serious health condition that affects your feelings, thoughts and actions. It makes you sad, bored and unable to function well. But it can be treated. Depression does not look the same in everyone. Some common signs are feeling low, not caring, eating more or less, sleeping too much or too little, feeling tired, restless, slow, worthless, guilty, confused and thinking of ending your life.

Asthma: Asthma is a condition that lasts for a long time and affects the tubes in your lungs that carry air in and out. If you have asthma, the tubes can get swollen and tight sometimes. This makes it harder for air to come out of your tubes when you breathe out. There is no cure for asthma, but treatment and an asthma action plan can help you control it. The method may include checking, avoiding triggers, and using medicines.

Blisters: A small bubble of fluid under the skin. It can happen when the skin is rubbed, burned, or infected, called a skin blister. A pocket of fluid under the top layer of skin. There are many reasons for blisters, such as burns, rubbing, and skin diseases. It is also called Bleb and Bulla.

Bunions: A bunion is a hard bump on the side of the big toe that makes the toe point inward. It happens when the joint of the big toe is pushed out of place over time by the way one walks or the shape of one’s foot. Bunions can run in families or be caused by foot injuries or diseases. Bunions can cause pain, swelling, redness, stiffness, and numbness in the toe, making it hard to wear shoes. A doctor can diagnose bunions by looking at the foot and taking X-rays. Different kinds of bunions depend on where they are and when they start.

Cysts: A cyst is a tissue sac containing air, liquid, or other substances. Cysts can form anywhere in the body for different reasons. Infections, parasites, or diseases cause some cysts. Blocked glands or pores in the skin cause others. Cysts can vary in size and shape and may cause pain, swelling, or cosmetic problems. Some cysts need to be drained or removed by surgery, especially if they are infected or look like skin cancer. Pilonidal is a common type of skin cyst at the top of the buttocks.

Enuresis: Enuresis is when children wet the bed or their clothes even though they are old enough to control their bladder. This can happen during the day or the night, and it can be a problem that starts from the beginning or comes back after a period of dryness. Enuresis is more common in boys than in girls, and it affects about 5 million children older than age 6 in the U.S. There are many possible causes of enuresis, such as poor toilet training, small bladders, sleep problems, hormone problems, or family history. Some medications can also affect sleep and cause enuresis.

Ganglions: Ganglion is a word that can mean two different things. One meaning is a group of nerve cells that work together. Another meaning is a lump of fluid that forms near a tendon, usually around the wrist. This article will focus on the second type of ganglion, which is also called a ganglion cyst.

Gonorrhoea: Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae or gonococcus, also known as “the clap”. It can be transmitted through unprotected vaginal, oral or anal intercourse or through sharing contaminated sex toys that have not been sanitised or covered with a new condom each time. The bacterium can infect various anatomical sites, such as the cervix, the urethra, the rectum, the pharynx or the eyes. Pregnant women with gonorrhoea must undergo testing and treatment before delivery to prevent vertical transmission to their infants and potential complications, such as ophthalmia neonatorum. Casual contacts, such as hugging, swimming pools, toilet seats, sharing baths, towels, cups, plates, or cutlery, do not acquire gonorrhoea. The bacterium is unable to survive for long outside the human host. Gonorrhoea may manifest as a purulent green or yellow discharge from the vagina or penis, dysuria and, in women, intermenstrual bleeding. However, some individuals may be asymptomatic carriers of the infection.

Gout: Gout is a kind of joint pain that happens when you have too much of a substance called uric acid in your body. Uric acid is normally dissolved in your blood and passes out in your urine, but sometimes it can build up and form sharp crystals in your joints. These crystals make your joints swollen, red and very painful. Gout can affect one or more joints at a time. Sometimes it comes and goes quickly, and sometimes it lasts for a long time and keeps coming back. Gout is more likely to happen in men, older people, people who drink alcohol, and people who have certain health problems or take certain medicines that affect how uric acid is removed from the body. The exact reason why some people get gout is not known. It may be something that runs in your family. You can lower your risk of gout by drinking plenty of water, eating less meat and seafood, and avoiding alcohol.

Headache: Headache is a painful or uncomfortable condition of the head or face with various causes and manifestations. Depending on the type and origin of the headache, it may be accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, or photophobia. The pain may originate from different structures in the head, such as the scalp, cranial and facial nerves, muscles, or blood vessels. Some common types of headaches are migraine, tension, and cluster headaches. Migraine is a headache that involves additional symptoms besides pain, such as nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness, or visual disturbances. It may have different phases, such as a premonition phase, an aura phase, a headache phase, and a resolution phase. A tension headache is a headache that may be caused by stress or muscle tension. It is characterised by a gradual onset, bilateral and dull pain, and mild to moderate intensity. It usually does not cause nausea, vomiting, or photophobia. A cluster headache is a headache that occurs in a series that can last for weeks or months. It is characterised by severe and unilateral pain behind one eye and signs of autonomic dysfunction such as redness, watering, ptosis, miosis, oedema, nasal discharge or congestion, and forehead swelling. Headaches can be primary or secondary. A primary headache is the main clinical problem and may be influenced by medications, dehydration, or hormonal changes. A secondary headache is a symptom of an underlying medical condition such as cervical trauma, ocular disorder, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, dental infection or sinusitis.

Laxative: A substance that helps people have bowel movements more easily and frequently. It treats constipation when the stools are hard and difficult to pass. Laxatives can have side effects, such as diarrhoea if used too much. Some examples of laxatives are milk of magnesia, Senna and Psyllium.

Prostate Enlargement: In ageing men, prostate enlargement, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a common non-cancerous condition. It involves the overgrowth of the prostate gland, which produces seminal fluid and encircles the urethra. As the prostate enlarges, it compresses the urethra and interferes with normal urination. Men with BPH may experience difficulty initiating or completing urination, frequent or urgent urination, and weak or interrupted urine flow. The prostate gland undergoes two phases of growth: one during puberty and another after age 25. The aetiology of BPH is unknown, but it may involve hormonal or genetic factors. BPH affects most men over 50 and up to 90 per cent of men over 80.

Rheumatism: It is a condition that causes pain and discomfort in the joints and the spine. The affected parts may hurt or feel sore when you move or touch them. They may also feel stiff when you stay still for a long time. You may feel better after doing some gentle exercise or warming up the affected parts. But you may feel worse after a hard workout or when the weather changes, especially when it gets colder and wetter. Some people with rheumatism have more problems than others, but most have at least the first four.

Tendonitis: It is an inflammatory condition of the tendons, which are the cords that connect the muscles and bones. The inflammation results in pain and tenderness near the affected joint. The most common sites of tendonitis are the shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees and heels. The treatment for tendonitis consists of rest, physical therapy and analgesics. Chronic inflammation can lead to tendon rupture, which may necessitate surgical intervention. The symptoms of tendonitis are felt where the tendon attaches to the bone and include a dull ache upon movement of the injured limb or joint, soreness upon palpation and mild swelling.

Tonsillitis: It is when the tonsils, two soft tissues at the back of the throat, become inflamed. This can cause symptoms such as swollen tonsils, sore throat, trouble swallowing, fever, swollen neck glands, hoarse voice, bad breath, stomachache, neck pain or headache. Tonsillitis can affect children of any age, but it is more common in preschool and teenagers. Sometimes, young children may drool, refuse to eat, or act fussy because of tonsillitis. Viruses or bacteria can cause tonsillitis. The treatment depends on the cause, so seeing a doctor for a diagnosis is important. Sometimes, surgery may be needed to remove the tonsils if they cause frequent or severe problems.

Ulcers: A wound that breaks the skin, mouth lining, stomach, or intestines. Ulcers can have different causes, depending on where they are. Ulcers on the skin are usually caused by friction, like in bedsores, and may become worse or infected over time. Ulcers in the digestive system used to be blamed on stress, but most of them are now linked to a germ called Helicobacter pylori. However, stress, smoking, and other factors can worsen these ulcers.

Vertigo: It is a sensation of movement or spinning that affects you or your surroundings, even though you are still. It can cause dizziness or loss of balance. Vertigo is not a condition by itself but a symptom of another issue. Vertigo can be brief or long-lasting, depending on the cause. It can make everyday activities difficult. You may also feel nauseous or throw up when you have vertigo.
